Sherman College of Chiropractic
Case Study
Problem
In 2016, incoming president Dr. Edwin Cordero realized the challenges faced by the fledgling college: siloed departments, academic professionals appointed to leadership positions, and an inability to prioritize work in order to be efficient. Attendance was at an all-time low, with dissatisfied board member and donors. Dr. Cordero’s sense of urgency and business-like approach to remedy matters did not endear the staff and faculty to him and did not poise the college to move forward in a productive manner.
Solution:
After conducting a SWOT analysis and identifying major opportunities for smart growth, “Obsessed with Student Success” and “Obsessed with Employee Success” became clear pathways going forward to ensure that employees at Sherman College remained laser-focused on agreed outcomes. Rico implemented a “train-the-trainer” process, where he taught, certified and licensed select individuals amongst Sherman College’s staff in the process and tools to conduct ongoing training, arming the college to continue its growth and development going forward. Dr. Cordero was successful in more than doubling the enrollment within the first three years of his tenure, and diversity among the student body is also at an all-time high, with Hispanic students accounting for more than 20 percent of total college enrollment. Improvements under Dr. Cordero’s leadership also included successful completion of a $22 million campus master plan investment featuring construction of the Gelardi Student Center.
